Matlock pensioner left partner with a bloody wound

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday, September 8, how Gerald Bates, 67, of Black Rocks Avenue, Matlock, pushed his partner on a bed and her head fell back on a drill.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “Police were called. The complainant had a half-inch cut to the back of her head which was bleeding profusely.

“They had gone to bed that night and the dog stays in their bedroom but was not settling. Bates got ratty and threatened to kill the dog and his partner was sat on the bed and he pushed her backwards and she hit her head on a drill.”

Bates pleaded guilty to assault after the incident on August 31.

The court heard that Bates had to be re-arrested on September 5 after he breached his bail by attending their address.

Steve Brint, defending, said Bates and his partner are disabled and co-dependent.

Mr Brint added: “He thought she would just fall back on the bed. He phoned the ambulance service. He’s extremely apologetic. He was later forced to leave alternative accommodation while on bail and visited his partner and when police arrived he was having a cup of tea and was taken into custody.”

District Judge Morris Cooper adjourned the case until October 1 to consider reports before sentencing.

Bates was released on bail until his sentencing.
