Matlock’s Hall Leys Park still one of UK’s best

The stunning town centre park received the accolade today (July 29).

The national award, handed out by charity Keep Britain Tidy, rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Communities Committee, Cllr Jennifer Bower, said: “Hall Leys Park really is the jewel in Matlock’s crown and this sixth consecutive national award recognises the brilliant work carried out throughout the year by our parks and streets teams.

“We know from listening to local people that keeping the Dales clean and green is a priority and this Green Flag is a tribute to the terrific work that goes on daily, not just in Matlock, but in all our beautiful parks and gardens throughout the Derbyshire Dales.”

Hall Leys park is among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces receiving 2013 Green Flag awards.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.

“Quality green spaces are absolutely essential to happy, healthy communities. They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages. That is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
