A community group hosted its first public meeting to showcase its plans for The Grand Pavilion in Matlock Bath.

The group gave residents the chance to see future plans for the grand building which is set to under go a £2.5 million revamp.

At the meeting, on Monday, the action group launched The Friends of the Grand Pavilion, for supporters to get involved and members also took a tour of the Pavilion.

Malock Baath Pavilion Group chairman, Gregor Macgregor, said the event was well attended and around 40 new members signed up to support the project.

He added: “The meeting went really well and we had a lot of positive comments about the work.

“What was interesting was being able to explain the plans and show how they would actually work inside the building.”

The group has also announced the first Grand Pavilion patrons are Simon Groom, resident and a former star of the television programme Blue Peter, who spent much time in the Pavilion as a youth and wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering.

Mr Macgregor said the question everyone was asking at the meeting was how long the work would take.

He added: “We can’t answer that until we have got more progress on the grant application but now we can really start work on getting the grants as we have a group devoted to that.

“We have three years as our target then we will be in a position to start construction work.”

Work is set to take around a year to transform the Pavilion in to a multi-purpose community facility incorporating an arts and entertainment centre. This will include restoring the main hall to its former glory as a theatre space for local and touring theatre productions.

The group has also announced it has been registered as a charity – The Grand Pavilion Limited – and has launched a new website;
