Met Office extends Derbyshire snow warning by further six hours

On Wednesday morning the Government agency issued a yellow ‘be aware’ alert for snow in the county between 5pm on Wednesday and 9am on Thursday. That has now been extended until 3pm on Thursday.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected during Thursday morning, clearing from the north and west through the day.

“The heaviest snow is expected to affect parts of southeast Scotland and upland areas of northern England, including cross-Pennine routes, where three to six centimetres may fall in a number of areas, with possibly as much as ten centimetres locally, mainly above elevations of 200 metres.

“Please be aware of the risk of disruption to travel and take appropriate precautions before undertaking journeys.

“It will also be worth keeping fully up-to-date with the latest forecasts – details of amounts and areas affected may well change.”

The majority of the county has so far escaped the worst of the weather – but on road remains closed because of black ice and snow.

Cheshire police said the A54 Bosley lights junction to Buxton is shut.

There are currently no other reported road closures in Derbyshire.

The Cat and Fiddle has now reopened after being closed for several hours but drivers are being warned to take extra care on the route as ice is likely to be an issue.

Derbyshire County Council said its team of gritters had treated all the area’s main roads overnight.
