Milestones to mark passage of Olympic Torch

Town leaders are being asked to pay £500 for milestones to line the route of the Olympic Torch.

Bosses at Derbyshire County Council have come up with the idea to install nine milestones at key points as a permanent reminder of this special year.

The authority has applied to Matlock, Darley Dale and Bakewell town council’s to take part in the scheme, as well as Glapwell, Bolsover, Calow, Chesterfield, Buxton and Ashbourne.

The stones would be sourced from local quarries and specifically chosen to match the stone in each place.

They will each state the name of the town or village, distance in miles to the Olympic Park and a line of poetry.

The proposal was discussed at a recent meeting of Matlock Town Council.

Clerk Susan Smith said: “They would like each town to be involved if they can by supporting the project and organising a ceremony to unveil it.”

She said that the town council could afford to pay for the stone even if it had to take the money from somewhere else.

Cllr Barrie Tipping said: “I think it would be nice to have in the town for future generations.”

The councillors voted unanimously in favour of the project subject to a satisfactory answer to various queries.
