Missing walker lost in bog

Three mountain rescue teams were called into action after a walker went missing in the middle of a bog.

On Friday, a walker was reported overdue following a late afternoon wander onto Kinder Scout. Mobile phone contact with the walker confirmed that he was lost in the middle of a boggy Kinder Scout.

Rescue teams from Edale, Kinder and Buxton began searching for the man

Several search parties were deployed into the Jacobs Ladder and Crowden Brook areas. Fortunately, a Buxton Team member was walking on Kinder Scout at the time of the call-out and after a short time searching located the missing walker.

The casualty, a 69-year-old man from Nottingham, had ventured alone onto Kinder Scout – the highest point in the Peak District – without a map or compass.

Low cloud had hampered the man’s progress and he ended up stranded and disorientated amongst the peat groughs of Crowden Head. The man was brought to safety by 11.30pm and was taken home by a friend after a medical examination.

A team spokesman said: “The team is reluctant to criticise the actions of any of the casualties we deal with, however this may be an example of underestimating the difficulties of navigation on the Peak District moorlands and some foolhardiness in the lack of preparation.”
