More support for secondary schools to raise standards

Secondary schools will get extra support to raise standards under proposals agreed by Derbyshire County Council.

Proposals include placing mentor head teachers into failing schools and the training of staff to help teachers in the county’s most vulnerable schools.

A budget of £100,000 has been drafted to strengthen the council’s secondary school improvement team.

Councillor Kevin Gillott, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Our ambition is for all our schools to be either good or outstanding.

“We are aware that the increasingly challenging demands made by Ofsted have resulted in some of our secondary schools failing to meet the expected grade. And while we recognise the main responsibility for attainment lies with the school, we do have a role to play in supporting schools to be the best they can be.

“These new measures will strengthen our ability to provide effective support to help secondary schools raise standards while also robustly challenging under-performing schools.”
