Crowds packed into one Dales school over the weekend for a special concert held in memory of a much-loved teacher.

The musical spectacular took place at Lady Manners School on Saturday night as a tribute to Richard Barnes who died aged 65 earlier this year.

Mr Barnes, who inspired generations of talented musicians as a music teacher at the Bakewell school for almost four decades, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family in July.

The memorial concert was organised and performed by Bakewell Choral Society, which Mr Barnes founded in 1978.

Jeanette Lumb, chairman of Bakewell Choral Society, said: “It went amazingly well and proved to be a wonderful, fitting tribute to Richard.

“I’d like to think he would have been extremely proud of us.”

Mrs Lumb said it was a “very emotional night” adding that “it felt like Richard was there with us”.

“There were a lot of tears but at the same time we got lots of applause and smiles.

“His widow said she was really pleased with the evening.”

Mr Barnes was awarded an MBE for services to education and music in 2007.

After his death, hundreds of past and present pupils and colleagues took to the social networking website Facebook to pay tribute to Mr Barnes, who died of an inoperable brain tumour.

They described him as “legendary” and a “real inspiration who will be so hugely missed.
