Music in the Park planned this year

The brainchild of Movies in the Park is set to strike back with an idea he hopes will be even better – Music in the Park.

Irfan Shabir, of Maazi Indian Restaurant, put plans before the council 10 days ago to host a World Music event in Hall Leys Park in September this year.

Irfan said: “The idea is to put on a big music event with a difference.

“I want to do something that’s never been done before so I’m aiming to do a World Music event with flavours from every single continent.”

Combining a heady mix of African drumming, Latin American Salsa music, European folk and much more – Irfan is hoping that the line-up should appeal to a diverse mix of people.

Irfan has already been looking into what musical acts he could have on the bill for Music in the Park and promises he will search the whole country for the very best of musical talent from an abundance of genres.

However, the day will not just be about the music and will also showcase the very best of local businesses.

Irfan’s previous event, Movies in the Park, had 25 stalls set up by businesses in the area but this year the plans are to have 50 stalls.

Matlock Town Team is helping Irfan promote the event and sell the stalls and by the sounds of it – they’re doing a fantastic job already.

Irfan said: “Out of the 50 stalls we have available we’ve already sold all but seven of them.”

The businesses won’t just be limited to food and crafts, though, and the aim is that Music in the Park will encompass a wide mix of Dales businesses.

While the plans have not been given the official seal-of-approval yet, Irfan is hopeful that the event will be approved as it promotes Matlock and businesses in the area.

Irfan isn’t just stopping there, though, and is also planning to launch a new website very soon.

He is in the process of buying the website name of and hopes this will further boost the reputation of Matlock.

Irfan said: “I think there’s a lot of activities in Matlock but there is not a central place where people can go to get full information.”

His inspiration for the website came from – the official website that promotes activities that happen in New York City’s Central Park.

While Hall Leys Park may not have the same abundance of events of Central Park – Irfan, Matlock Town Team and others are working hard to guarantee that more and more will be planned for the future.

However, the website will also advise tourists on the best places to visit, top attractions in the area, pubs, bars, restaurants, shops, businesses and more.

What do you think of these ideas? Do they get your seal of approval?
