Musical contest in memory of Reg

A contest in memory of one of the’s most famous residents is seeking the county’s most talented young musicians.

The Dalesman Male Voice Choir is holding its third annual Dalesman Student Award Scheme, which provides the winner with £500 and the crystal ‘Reg Dean trophy’– named after the former Wirksworth resident who died aged 110 last year.

Past winners included pianist Eleanor Kornas, of Darley Dale, who went on to become a music scholar at Trinity College Cambridge.

The 2014 competition will take place at Ecclesbourne School, Duffield, on Saturday, May 3, and is open to all students who have achieved grade seven or above in their music exams and are at school or college in Derbyshire.

This year’s head adjudicator will be Christine Palmer, a professional pianist and an international examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and she will be joined by two other qualified adjudicators.
