Mystery trough theories

The Mercury has been inundated with calls from readers fascinated by a mysterious trough, discovered in Matlock Green.

The stone trough measured ten feet by four feet and was discovered on the site of the former Three Horseshoes pub.

Following the story in last week’s paper, many theories have been put forward as to what the trough was used for.

One reader maintained that the object was used for cleaning lead ore which was mined in Starkholmes nearby.

Many readers thought the trough was used to feed animals ranging from horses to cattle, while another Matlock resident thought the trough was used for collecting water for humans.
