Navigational challenges in the Dales

Budding explorers will soon have the opportunity to test their skills with 16 navigational challenge events this summer.

Derbyshire Dales District Council is staging the challenges, called ‘XPlorer’, throughout May and June.

The events aim to be a new and exciting outdoor challenge for the whole family to enjoy and involves a healthy mix of physical activity and decision making.

The authority, which operates parks and play areas throughout the Dales, has installed four new inclusive orienteering routes at its Ashbourne Recreation Ground, Bakewell Recreation Ground and award-winning Matlock Hall Leys Park. The Matlock route also includes the Dimple Playing Fields.

XPlorer events are launched in Ashbourne and Matlock on Saturday, May 25 at 10am, and participants are asked to meet at the Ashbourne Recreation Ground pavilion and Hall Leys Park bandstand.

A special XPlorer event willl take place at the Summer of Sport Day on June 8 at Carsington Water from 10am to 2pm.

The district council’s communities committee chairman Cllr Mrs Carol Walker said: “These are terrific family events and everyone is welcome to come along to try the Xplorer challenge. Participants get to explore our parks by finding markers, and no experience or equipment is needed.”
