New centre to fight domestic abuse

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Charles praised the work of support organisations as he declared the Derbyshire Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse Service headquarters, on Fairfield Road, Chesterfield, officially open.

The launch took place on Friday, on September 19, and saw police, public protection, community safety and council officers, representatives from charitable organisations and support service organisations gathered at the premises.

Mr Charles said: “It is vital organisations such as this exist. Domestic abuse support is important to me and is in my manifesto.”

The new DDVSAS has extended its hours for its drop-in and helpline services which now operate on Thursdays, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, and on Saturdays, from 9.30am and 1pm, in addition to the previous 10am – 4pm, Monday to Friday helpline operation.

Counselling sessions have been extended and plans are being made to add therapies. Services for professionals including training and domestic abuse awareness are also available.

Dena Trossell, of DDVSAS, said: “The event reaffirmed the strong relationship we have with partners across the county.”

The charity service was originally known as North Derbyshire Women’s Aid and was established in 1985 and is also linked to a refuge.
