New department store set for former Chesterfield club

Family firm Boyes is moving in to the ground floor of the former Department nightclub on Cavendish Street.

Chairman of the firm Andrew Boyes said the homeware and DIY store was to open in around three months and would offer over 30,000 different products from clothing and toiletries to haberdashery and stationery.

He said: “We chose Chesterfield because it’s a busy and prosperous town. We have had our eye on the town for some time and felt we could offer something different.”

He added: “We’ve had quite a few letters from shoppers saying we should come to Chesterfield so that has made us feel we would be welcome.”

Plans to convert the former venue which closed in 2012 were granted by Chesterfield Borough Council last year.

Mr Boyes said: “We’re very excited and there’s always a buzz around opening a new store.”

He added the business, which was founded by his great grandfather William Boyes in 1881, was expanding with around 40 stores across the midlands and the first Derbyshire Boyes opened in Ripley last year.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader John Burrows said: “It’s good to see some regeneration in this part of our town centre especially this long empty building.

“I’d like to welcome Boyes to Chesterfield, their investment in our town is another example of our retail success, and will provide much needed local employment as well.”

Chair of Destination Chesterfield, Peter Swallow added: “We’re delighted to welcome another big retail name to Chesterfield. It is great news that they will be occupying an vacant building which not only strengthens the town’s retail offering, but also our position as one of the UK’s top performing centres with the least vacant shops.”
