art reminder: Time is running out for budding artists aged between 16 and 19 to submit their entries to the Peak District Artisans’ Young Artist of the Year 2011 competition. Winners receive a cash prize, plus the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Great Dome Art Fair in Buxton in July. The deadline for entries is 6pm on Friday, May 20. Story time: Storyteller Dominic presents his latest show In Search of the Hound on Friday, May 6, at the Imperial Rooms. talent contest: Wirksworth’s Got Talent takes place on Saturday, May 21, at 7.30pm, at Wirksworth Town Hall. Entry forms will be available from Top Ken’s and the Anthony Gell School. Entry to the event is £2 on the door.

green day: All Saint’s Junior School will be holding an eco day on Saturday, May 7, from 10am to 3pm. There will be activities for children including pot painting and bird feed making, plus a visit from a beekeeper. Groups including Transition Matlock, Matlock Free-Cycle and Matlock Toy Library will be at the school and there is the chance to have a look around the school grounds.

ring the bells: Northern Bell Orchestra and Hot House Saxophonix are performing together at Ashover Parish Hall on Saturday, May 14, at 7.30pm. story walks: Two story walks are taking in landmarks and folklore this week. Mike Payton, of the Matlock Storytelling Cafe, leads a walk around Monsal Dale, at Ashford in the Water, starting from the Ashford Arms car park, on Church Street, on Thursday, May 5, at 10am. And Helen from Scarthin Arts leads a circular walk around Winster and Birchover, starting from Market House, on Main Street, in Winster, on Friday, May 6, at 10.30am.

walkers needed: More walkers are needed for the debut Chatsworth Walk in aid of Parkinson’s UK. The walk is a sponsored three- or ten-mile circular route starting at Chatsworth House on Saturday, June 11. Entry is £10 per adult, £5 per child under 16 for the ten-mile route and £5 per adult and free for under 16s on the three-mile route. No speeding: No motorists were found to be speeding during Community Speed Watch checks in Calver and Foolow over the past two weeks. Three hour-long sessions took place with volunteers along Main Road, Foolow, on Thursday, April 21, on the B6001 at Calver Crossroads on Saturday, April 30, and again in Foolow on Sunday, May 1.
