Officer’s trial G20 death

A POLICE officer is on trial following allegations that he struck a former Matlock man and caused him to have a heart attack.

PC Simon Harwood is accused of striking Ian Tomlinson with a baton and pushing him to the ground as he prepared to walk away from a line of officers policing the G20 protests in London.

The 47-year-old, who had been making his way home at the time and became blocked by officers, collapsed within minutes of the incident and later died of cardiac arrest.

Harwood, 45, from Carshalton in Surrey, maintains that he used reasonable force and has denied manslaughter at Southwark Crown Court.

The trial continues.
