Orchard launched

VILLAGERS in Baslow turned out in abundance to witness the Duke of Devonshire planting the first tree in a new community orchard.

Despite the chilly temperatures, children from St Anne’s School, residents and members of Baslow Jubilee Community Orchard Working Party all made their way down to watch the landmark moment.

Months of preparation had led up to the moment and the Duke suggested to the children that, in years to come, they might be bringing their own families to sample the fruits they had helped to nurture.

The children were also congratulated on their inventive submissions to the ‘Design a Logo for the Orchard’ competition and Thomas Palmer was presented with a small prize for his efforts.

In gratitude for his support, the Duke was presented with a local history book before the children planted the remaining trees.
