Two pupils at Highfields School are definitely top of the class after being offered the opportunity to study at Oxford University.

Tom Pickford, of Cromford, and Deborah Greer, of Matlock have been offered places at the prestigious university to study History and Biological Sciences respectively.

The students – who are both in their final year at Highfields School – have expressed their pride at being offered the places.

Deborah, who has an unconditional offer, said: “I am very excited at the prospect of studying all aspects of biology at Oxford University. The interviews were really demanding, but helped me to see a little bit of what academic life there might be like.”

Tom said: “I am working hard to gain the three A grades needed to confirm this place but I am enjoying the challenge, and keeping my options open.”

Highfields’ head of sixth form, Martin Flett, said it was a “great accolade” for students to be offered a place at Oxford but added it was “good seeing all our students finding universities and courses that suit them.”
