Parts of Derbyshire nearly as cold as Greenland's capital

The Met Office said Buxton, for example, will only see temperatures hit 14C.

In Greenland's largest city Nuuk - which is one of the coldest capitals in the world - temperatures won't be far behind with the mercury reaching 12C.

According to a Met Office spokesman, much of July will be unsettled - but there are signs of better conditions towards the end of the month.

It's a far cry from this time last year when the UK was in the grip of a heatwave - with 36.7C recorded in Heathrow on July 1.

Giving the reason for the poor weather at the moment, the Met Office spokesman said: "We're currently on the cold side of a strong jet stream which is bringing unsettled conditions.

"The jet stream is a band of fast-moving wind high up in the atmosphere."
