Peak District: major emergency response as multiple cars on fire

Firefighters continue to tackle major vehicle fires more than four hours after being called to the scene.

A large-scale fire service presence is on-scene at New Road, in the Peak District village of Bamford, with fears that the blazes could spread to adjacent moorland

Emergency services were called to the village shortly before 1pm to reports of several vehicles on fire – thought it is currently unknown if the incidents are connected.

The road is currently closed and people are being asked to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 12.52 hours to several cars on fire on New Road, Bamford. We currently have four fire engines and a water carrier on scene.

“We are working to prevent the fire spreading to adjacent moorland.

“New Road is currently closed. Please avoid the area.”

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary added: “We were called to reports of a number of vehicles on fire on New Road at Bamford just after 12.55pm today, Friday 8 September.

“Officers are at the scene to manage road closures and will work with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service around any investigation if appropriate.

“New Road is currently closed between Bamford and Hathersage. We would advise drivers to find alternative routes.”
