Boozy Brian Fletcher, 75, was caught by police as he attempted to drive the short journey from the Bowling Green Pub, in Bradwell, to his home in Bradwell Head Road.

Police spotted Mr Fletcher driving suspiciously just before 11pm on December 18.

Jennifer Fitzgerald, prosecuting, told Buxton Magistrates on Monday that police approached Fletcher’s car and immediately smelled alcohol upon opening the door.

The officer also noted Fletcher’s demeanour was “drowsy with slurred speech”.

Ms Fitzgerald said that after a positive alcohol test was given, Fletcher became violent towards the officer.

At this point the pensioner was handcuffed and arrested, the court heard.

Saul Comish, defending, said Fletcher believed he was in a fit state to drive the short distance home.

He added that Fletcher – who has no previous convictions – intended to retire from driving and commented it was a “sad end” to a previously unblemished driving career.

But despite the gesture, magistrates banned Flecther from driving for 17 months and fined him a total of £215.
