Peak show draws crowds of visitors and exhibitors

A great number of exhibitors turned out on a beautiful autumn day to discover who had been awarded prizes in Dethick, Lea & Holloway Horticultural Society’s 46th event.

Visitors were able to view everything from champion carrots to winning wines, photographs to sponge cakes and woodcarvings to floral arrangements at Lea School on Saturday.

The prize-giving was conducted by Geoff Brown, society chairman, and Malcolm Rowell, retiring show manager.

Jennie Taylor was awarded The John Smedley Cup for the competitor scoring highest total marks in the whole show.

She triumphed in the vegetable section where trophies were also presented to Eric Harrison, Jane Virden and Glynis Maycock, the latter also winning awards for her fruit exhibits.

Jennie was also successful in the floral section, where fellow award-winners included Eric Harrison, Nancy Slaney, Jackie Mitchell and Audrey Lambeth. Pam Gibbs picked up two awards in the floral art section.

Jackie Mitchell and Colin Virdin won trophies for their home produce exhibits while Tom Gibbs picked up the trophy in the wine section.

Audrey Lambeth and Pam Gibbs took home the silverware for their crafts.

Dennis Brook and Peter Gibbon were awarded trophies for their photography entries.

In the junior section, Josh Good, Max Neiper and Holly Jury won the silverware.

Junior Horticultural Society prizes went to Josh Good, Grace Galvin, Max Neiper, Holly Jury and Izzy Frobisher.
