Bakewell community rallies round to deliver Christmas hampers to isolated residents

For the past 26 years, Heather Thomas and David and Christine Down have hosted lunch at Bakewell Methodist Church premises for people who would otherwise spend the day alone.

With this year’s event ruled out by public health restrictions, the trio were even more keen to let their neighbours know that they had not been forgotten – particularly as so many of them have been isolating for many months.

Heather said: “In these challenging days for everyone, it’s necessary to show our love and care for those who are vulnerable and lonely.”

Working through Bakewell Churches Together, Heather asked four local congregations, primary schools and supermarkets to help reach people who might appreciate a hamper.

The supermarkets – including Aldi, Spar and Co-op – provided vouchers for tins of ham, salmon, cheese and biscuits. The schools provided Christmas puddings, crackers, cards and a gifts, while the churches supplied teabags and money.

Each parcel was rounded off with homemade mince pies and Christmas cake, together with chocolates.

Heather said: “We are very pleased to say that the community responded magnificently. A big thank you to all who helped – you will have made someone feel loved and remembered this Christmas.”

Surplus donations will be given to High Peak Food Bank.
