Sharon Hill contacted the Derbyshire Times to complain about the appearance of the cemetery at Newbold Parish Church, where both her parents are buried.

“It’s never been in such disarray – it saddens me so much,” said 55-year-old Sharon, who has lived in Newbold all her life.

“You can't help but notice the state of the graveyard – it’s very badly maintained.

“There are piles of old tree branches which have obviously been there a while.

“Large branches are strewn over graves.

“I have recently contacted Chesterfield Borough Council and they informed me the church is responsible for maintaining the graveyard.

“It's disgraceful in a place of rest and very upsetting for visitors.”

A borough council spokesperson said: “Chesterfield Borough Council is responsible for the grounds maintenance of this churchyard.

“The maintenance carried out involves the strimming of grass around graves and keeping paths clear of weeds and debris.

“The council does not maintain individual graves unless they pose a risk to the safety of the public.

“We are aware that there are several downed branches around and debris on some of the paths following the recent storms and the team are working to remove these in the next week.”

Newbold Parish Church, which is based on St John’s Road, did not want to comment.
