The project is part of the £3.25million Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield scheme, which also promises to breathe new life into the town’s historic market.
Work to make improvements to Elder Way started in January.
This work – which is expected to be finished by the summer – promises to ‘create a more inviting pedestrian route from the Northern Gateway development to the retail centre of the town’, according to Chesterfield Borough Council.

“The next stage will see high-quality paving and other works finished to create a wider and more inviting pedestrian environment that will encourage people to spend time in this part of our town close to the new Northern Gateway enterprise centre.
“These works should be completed by summer 2021.”
The project is a key part of the council’s Northern Gateway scheme which has already seen the opening of the new Premier Inn at Elder Way and the new Saltergate multi-storey car park.
Building work on an enterprise centre consisting of new offices is also progressing on part of the Donut roundabout.

According to the council, Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield is being funded by the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
Leaders say the project will support the creation of 66 jobs as well as safeguarding 80 jobs on the outdoor market.
Earlier this year, Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This ambitious project will breathe new life into the town centre and improve the quality of the area by making it a more attractive place to visit.

“Improving the town centre in this way should help set a vision for the future of Chesterfield and further demonstrates how important our high street is to the future economic success of the borough.”
