Lord Burlington said: “Foundation Derbyshire serves the entire county and hopefully this cycling challenge reflects that.

"During my time as High Sheriff, I witnessed first-hand the positive impact that Foundation Derbyshire’s grant funding is making to the quality of life of people all across Derbyshire. “

“Anyone who identifies with Derbyshire will identify with Foundation Derbyshire and by donating to their fund your money will be making a difference for many years to come.”

Starting in Sudbury, the circular route soon becomes hilly as it takes the team through the Peak District to Glossop, over Snake Pass and then on round to Killamarsh before heading south again, always staying as close to the border as the roads permit.

As Chancellor of the University of Derby, Lord Burlington worked with experts at the University's Human Performance Unit.

Derby-based Huub have donated bespoke jerseys for the ride, which they helped design.

Rachael Grime, Foundation Derbyshire’s chief executive, added: “This is a Herculean undertaking and we are delighted and humbled that Lord Burlington and his fellow cyclists are supporting us in this way.

"Over the past 23 years, we have distributed more than £15 million to local voluntary groups and organisations, but there is still so much more to do.
