Developers have secured planning permission to transform The Service Centre building, at the junction of Brimington Road North and Pottery Lane East, into a gym and martial arts centre.

Planning documents on Chesterfield Borough Council’s website say the development ‘will regenerate a local landmark building’ and ‘will have a positive impact on the locality and community safety’.

“The building is currently sparsely used and a potential target for vandalism and anti-social behaviour,” planning officers said.

“The change of use will ensure the site is fully occupied, a consequence of which will be an increase in the natural surveillance of the area.”

It is also hoped the plans will have a ‘positive’ impact on other businesses in the neighbourhood.

The garage owner is no longer in a position to carry on with the business, according to documents.
