Photographer captures rare 'white rainbow' in the Derbyshire countryside

The stunning 'white bow', or 'fog bow, when sunlight diffracts in misty water droplets, was spotted in Grindleford, by snapper Villager Jim. The weather phenomenon was caught this morning, Wednesdaym after forecasters issued a yellow weather warning for fog across many parts of Britain.

Jim, of Foolow, said: "I was out getting photos of a beautiful misty morning in the valleys near the River Derwent when I saw this white rainbow driving home.

"I just went 'woah' and slammed on the brakes to take some pics on my phone. I have never seen one before despite the low hanging mist we get around here a lot. It was an amazing thing to see. It was really slow moving mist this morning so it didn't fade at all. I spent five to ten minutes there just admiring it. I believe they are quite rare to see so it was quite a special moment."

The Met Office says a fogbow is similar in some respects to a traditional rainbow. However, it forms from sunlight interacting with water droplets contained in fog, mist or cloud rather than interacting with raindrops as it does in a classical rainbow In some cases, when the droplets are very small, fog bows appear white, and are therefore sometimes called white rainbows.

The Met Office earlier today issued a yellow weather warning for fog, due to last eight hours, across six UK regions.
