A family has been left devastated after their pet poodle was killed by another dog in a vicious attack.

The horror happened on Saturday morning when Alyssa Blackbourn, 21, was walking her ten-year-old cousin Isobelle to her dance class in Newbold. The pair were accompanied by Alyssa’s beloved five-month-old pooch Lola.

When they approached the dance hall on Ulverston Road, Lola – a border collie cross toy poodle – was savagely attacked and killed by an English bull terrier which had been roaming the streets.

Teaching student Alyssa, of Dunston Lane, Chesterfield, said: “We’re all absolutely heartbroken.

“Lola died not even half an hour after the attack, even though we immediately got her seen by a vet, who did everything possible to try and save her.

“But she could not be saved because she had too much damage to her internal organs,” added Alyssa, who has suffered sleepless nights following the attack.

Alyssa’s tearful mum Rachel, 41, said Lola was a big part of the family.

She added: “She was the most adorable, loving and intelligent dog.

“She was well-socialised with everyone and anyone who came into contact with her would instantly fall in love.

“I can’t begin to describe how upset we all are.

“If there is a plus point in all of this, at least my daughter and her cousin weren’t hurt – but this dog could quite easily have attacked someone else,” she added.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said officers had tracked down the owners of the English bull terrier and would be speaking to them as part of an investigation into the incident.

Mrs Blackbourn called on the dog’s owners to act more responsibly.

She said: “If it hadn’t been roaming the streets then this might never have happened and we wouldn’t be going through all this.”

Anyone who saw the attack should call Derbyshire police on 101.
