A crowd of over 700 watched on at The Park, the home of Buxton Cricket Club, as High Peak MP Andrew Bingham captained an MPs and Celebrities team against an Emmerdale team led by Matthew Wolfenden in the Twenty20 game.

“We reckon we’ve topped £10,000 in total, which is a phenomenal amount,” said Mr Bingham, who organised the event in aid of the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance.

“The air ambulance is a fantastic charity that is relied upon so much here in the High Peak, and I’m delighted we’ve been able to give something back.”

Members of the Emmerdale team included Chris Chittell, Bhasker Patel, Tony Audenshaw and former county cricketer Ashley Metcalfe, while turning out for the MPs and Celebrities team was Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood, Glossop entrepreneur Adam Corbally and former England and county cricketer Paul Nixon.

After winning the toss, the Emmerdale team forced the MPs and celebrities to bat first on a slightly soft wicket. However they rose to the challenge and posted 146 from their 20 overs.

Despite a valiant effort, the Emmerdale team could only muster 91 in response.

Mr Bingham added: “I want to thank absolutely everyone who helped make it such a fantastic day – the sponsors, players, helpers and above all the public for coming along to watch us play.”

The match, sponsored by Buxton Natural Mineral Water, was held on the anniversary of the Derbyshire versus Lancashire game in 1975 which was famously called off due to snow.
