Wirksworth is stepping up its challenge to become a plastic fantastic town – and a bag free community.
Eco campaigners hope to follow the example of Totnes in Devon and become a plastic bag free community.
The Recycling Group, which is part of Transition Wirksworth, is leading the project and is supporting the town’s traders in moving forward and building on the introduction of Wirksworth`s “bags for life” campaign.
Richard Finnigan of the group, said: “There are of course distinct benefits for the community`s environment as well as economic advantages for the traders.
“It is early days but an initial “audit” of the town`s shops was promising, with a large majority giving away very few plastic carrier bags and/or using a degradable variety.”
