SHOPPERs are being encouraged to show love for their local markets as part of a new campaign.

Derbyshire Dales District Council has launched the ‘Love Your Market’ campaign to remind people how great their local markets are.

Bakewell Farmers’ Market attracts around 5,000 each month – generating half a million pounds every year.

There are also stall markets in Bakewell town centre every Monday, Wirksworth Market Place on Tuesday and Matlock Market Hall on Tuesday and Friday.

Cllr Lewis Rose, leader of the council, said: “Bakewell Farmers’ Market is a continuing success story that brings real benefit to local businesses in and around the town.

“Our weekly Monday stall market in Bakewell is similarly well supported, but it’s sometimes a different picture at the stall markets we operate in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth.

“We committed recently to improving the way we promote these markets, which have a rich heritage and continue to be an important part of the communities they serve.

“In launching the ‘Love Your Market’ campaign we’re encouraging local people who want to see this weekly tradition continue to make a point of visiting our markets more regularly.”

‘Love Your Market’ posters are to be displayed at the sites of the council’s stall markets.

District and town councillor Sue Burfoot was due to address the leader Cllr Rose at a full council meeting today (Thursday) with regard to the Matlock market.

She noted that the old Lido site in Matlock will provide more parking spaces in the short term and suggested that an open air market could be opened on the car park in front of the Town Hall.
