Premier Inn makes bid to build on Matlock site

A top hotel chain has opened negotiations to build a 50–bed hotel in front of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Arc Leisure Matlock.

Premier Inn, the UK and Ireland’s biggest hotel company, wants the district council, which owns the land, to agree to a six-months’ exclusivity period to allow time for board approval and to complete ground surveys and draw up legal requirements.

The company’s £400,000 offered for the site is the same amount the district council borrowed towards the overall cost of the £12-million Arc Leisure Matlock, pending the eventual sale of the land.

Any formal deal will be subject to Premier Inn successfully getting planning permission for a 50-bed hotel, a restaurant for guests and car parking.

The site, below the Arc building and fronting the main A6 road, was used by contractors as a base during the building of Arc in 2010 and 2011. It was formerly a car park and community centre - a facility now housed in the main Arc building.

Councillors will discuss Premier Inn’s offer at a meeting of the District Council’s Community Committee this Thursday, October 17.
