£30,300 to tell Stoney Middleton’s tale

Stoney Middleton Heritage Centre Community Group has been awarded a £30,300 grant to fund a pioneering project to tell the tale of the village’s past.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant will finance the community project – which will tell the story of the village’s past, highlighting its wealth of heritage, intriguing folklore and legends.

The project aims to collect and digitise pictures, documents, and audio recordings of the village elders, providing the collection through a single web portal, allowing on-line public access to the collection

It will further highlight its heritage via its village trails leading walkers around the village’s various points of interest.

Project leader Colin Hall said: “This is fantastic news for the village. The HLF grant will enable the village to tell its story. Once overlooked and obscured by its industrial past, it will now show off and be remembered for its charm, wealth of heritage, legends and fascinating folklore.”

The project requires helpers, though, and any willing volunteers are urged to visit http://smhccg.org/.
