Record year for start-up businesses in Derbyshire

Derbyshire has smashed the record for the number of new businesses launched in the area in a single year, according to new research.

Statistics, compiled by informdirect.co.uk have revealed that there were 5,987 companies formed in 2014, up from a previous best of 5,198.

This brings the total number of businesses operating in the region to a high of 39,463.

There were 1,756 new companies in Derby, followed by 805 in Bolsover, 555 in Amber Valley and 549 in Chesterfield. In Erewash there were 533 formed, 416 in the Derbyshire Dales and 500 in the High Peak.

Henry Catchpole, CEO of Inform Direct, said: “This is clearly a place where fledgling firms are flourishing and where people are starting to make their dreams a reality in the word of business.”

After taking account of companies dissolved in 2014, there are 6.8 per cent more companies in Derbyshire at the end of the year. That’s s ahead of national growth of 6.6 per cent.

The 39,463 companies now based in Derbyshire is nearly a third more than just five years ago.

Last year in the UK as a whole, 586,784 new businesses were registered with Companies House taking the total number to a record high of 3,509,084. Private limited companies made up over 95 per cent of all formations.
