Rescue team pulls sheep from danger ledge in the Peaks

The Buxton Mountain Rescue team said on Monday, June 13 that the team went out in search of a sheep after reports came in, but initially couldn't find the worried animal.

A spokesman said: "On Friday the team was called to the Monsal Trail, following a report of a sheep stuck on a rock ledge high above Water cum Jolly Dale. Despite a search the area the team couldn’t locate the animal and the incident was closed.

"The following day (Saturday June 11) a second call was received, reporting a sheep stuck on a ledge, some eighty feet above the River Wye, overlooking Water cum Jolly Dale.

"Armed with fresh information this time the team found the animal on a small limestone ledge.

"A rope rescue system was set up and a rescuer was lowered to the ledge, sheep are very unpredictable and this one began to back off the ledge. The quick thinking rescuer grabbed the animal and both were suspended on the rock wall, the sheep was quickly placed into slings and hauled up by colleagues back to the Monsal Trail, followed by a round of applause from visitors watching below. The sheep was released unharmed and soon back to its favourite diet – grass.
