Riding bicycles and being nice is not enough

May I put through your columns the question which the speaker did not answer at her talk in Wirksworth on June 5th concerning the future of farming.

If it is inevitable that climate change will make inroads up to 40% in tropical food production which only GM technology can deal with, is not Western consumer resistance to free trade in GM a major threat to the world’s well-being?

Wirksworth Transition Group, who organised the talk, appear as a mutual admiration group united in the belief that riding bicycles, gardening and being generally nice to everybody will ensure that everything turns out fine.

May I draw attention to the Wirksworth Festival event at the Hope& Anchor on September 19th, “Wind Turbines or Eco-Scams”?

A countervailing view should be given adequate expression there.
