Runner rescued after 50ft fall in Edale race

Early reports indicated a simple accident in Grindsbrook Clough, Edale, on the valley path, on Saturday, September 13, but the reality turned out to be different.

A 45-year-old man, from Edale, was competing in the Edale Beer Barrel Race between the Snake Inn and Edale when he slipped and fell about 50ft down the hillside whilst descending from the Kinder Plateau between Upper and Nether Tor, high above the Grindsbrook Valley.

The man was lying on the hillside and was believed to have suffered a reduced level of consciousness for a considerable period.

Both Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue teams were called and the casualty was assessed by the Edale paramedics and a doctor and a head injury was suspected.

A decision was taken to request an RAF Sea King helicopter to transport the casualty for further medical care.

The casualty was winched into the aircraft and flown to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, for treatment.
