Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard last Friday how Daniel Parkes, 37, of Spring Bank Road, Chesterfield, stole four steaks valued at £33.96 from Lidl.

Prosecuting solicitor Ian Shaw said: “The Lidl security officer became aware because of a signal in the store and saw two members of staff chasing after a male and Parkes was caught, detained and brought back. He was found with four steaks in a bag and he told police he had gone to Lidl intending to steal and would have sold the goods to buy alcohol because he is an alcoholic.”

Parkes, who has previous convictions including shoplifting offences, pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on April 5.

Defence solicitor John Wilford said: “Mr Parkes made frank and full admissions and gave a guilty plea. He had just been released on March 26 and had lost his accommodation and was of no fixed abode and he had succumbed to the alcohol problems he had before.

“He is trying to turn his life round and he has found somewhere to live. He recognises he has to do something about the alcohol abuse.”

Parkes also pleaded guilty to stealing coffee from a Spar. He was sentenced on Tuesday to eight weeks custody suspended for 12 months with supervision and an alcohol activity requirement. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs, an £80 victim surcharge and £17.50 compensation.
