The Mercury has launched a Don’t Ditch Darley campaign in a bid to safeguard the future of the birth centre and we are calling on our readers to get involved by signing our petition below.
Petitions have also been distributed across the Matlock this week and many business bosses have kindly agreed to have one on their front counters.
Public consultation on the unit’s future is set to begin in August. Consultation will take place in two stages and is expected to last until October, with a decision made by the board in November.
NHS chiefs say births at Darley cost between £1,100 and £3,000 more than births at a major hospital or at home and that saving the centre from closure would come at the cost of other services.
