At a meeting at County Hall in Matlock on Tuesday, the authority approved a motion to officially designate land off Cromford Road as the site for a possible new school to replace the town’s two infants and one junior school.

It previously identified land at The Meadows in the centre of the town for the merged school, but following discussions with interested parties, the landowner and the county council, the land is considered unsuitable because of access issues and terrain.

Derbyshire County Council’s deputy cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Caitlin Bisknell, said: “It is important that we get the site for any new school right, so I’m pleased that we were able to bring everyone who is involved together to find a more suitable location.”

Councillors discussed the proposals for the new site off Cromford Road, opposite Spring Close, to the north of the town at Tuesday’s meeting. The cabinet agreed the notification of the proposed new site, along with the de-notification of the original site.

Following the meeting, a council spokesman said: “A new site for potential development has been identified if a new school was to be built in the future.

“Currently the money isn’t available to build a new school, but this site has now been identified if the money becomes available in the future.”
