It was a wartime wedding for a pair of lovebirds who have celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

Audrey Cowen was 17 years old when she married Arthur Monaghan, 22, on June 27, 1942.

The couple, of Bakewell, had met two years previously, having been introduced by Arthur’s brother, Gerald.

Audrey had to save up margarine coupons to pay for her white brocade and lace wedding dress.

They had their wedding reception in Bakewell Town Hall and their guests all brought food and drink.

Arthur worked at the battery on Lumford and Audrey ran a fruit and vegetable shop together with a florist in Buxton Road.

Still living in Bakewell, Arthur, 93, and Audrey, 88, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their family.

Their daughter, Joan, said: “There aren’t many couples who can boast a whole 70 years of marriage, it really is a love story to melt the heart and we all feel so privileged to have them both with us”
