Stomach aneurysm man urges others to get checked out

Michael Boyce, 65, of Meadow Place, Matlock, was screened in March and found to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), which if left can burst and cause severe internal bleeding that is usually fatal.

The retired electrical engineer, said: “When they found it I was shocked.

“I left the doctors and wandered around the park wondering if it was the end.”

Mr Boyce, who has since had the aneurysm removed through open surgery, is now urging others to ensure they are screened as part of a programme launched by NHS Derbyshire last year.

“This could save your life” he said. “I would urge people to take it seriously and get something done about it before it’s too late.”

During the first year over 6,000 men have been screened in the county, resulting in the detection of over 80 aneurysms.

John Quarmby, clinical director of the programme said: “Men who have an abdominal aortic aneurysm will not generally notice any symptoms, which is why screening is so important.

“Using a simple ultrasound test we are able to effectively identify this treatable life threatening condition.”
