Summer solstice swimathon in Hathersage

On the longest day of the year, people are invited to Hathersage Swimming Pool for a 24-hour swimathon.

The open-air pool will be open from 3.30am on Friday, June 21, until 3.30am on Saturday, June 22, to mark the summer solstice.

Jo Wiman, of Hathersage Parish Council and Pool Marketing Group, said: “This will give swimmers or spectators the opportunity to swim or watch as the sunrises and sets. What could be more spectacular than swimming in beautiful surroundings through the night and as the sun rises over the rocks of Stanage Edge and bathes the pool in light?”

As well as being a relaxing event for those that choose, the gauntlet has been laid down for anybody who fancies a challenge.

Jo said: “Could your readers swim a mile at midnight or take part in the challenge to swim 1 mile every hour for 24 hours?”
