A COUPLE who grew up playing together in the same street are celebrating 60 years of marriage.
June and Lou Spencer were married at Mt Zion Chapel in Middleton on September 22, 1951, but Lou insists June actually proposed as an eight-year-old living opposite him in New Road.
June, now 79, says their marriage has been very happy despite a difficult start.
A week after their wedding Lou was called up to fight in the Korean War. He missed the birth of their first child and returned home wounded two years later.
Lou then worked as a painter and decorator until the 1970s when the couple ran the local service station. They were keen ballroom dancers until about four years ago and Lou, 81, is still involved with local choirs and bands.
The couple have two children, Michael and David, plus eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and now live in Duke Field, Middleton.
They celebrated with a party at the village hall.
