Takeaway approved for former Buxton post office

The Grade II listed building, at 9, The Quadrant, is currently vacant but was last used by Connexions Careers Service, which closed in January 2013.

High Peak Borough Council approved the application, submitted by Maxine Chuwen, to change the use of the ground floor from financial and professional services to a hot food takeaway.

In the design and access statement, planning agents DPP stated: “Whilst an end occupier has not yet been confirmed, the recent period of marketing has established that there is demand for a pizza takeaway at the site.”

It added: “The proposal will enhance the building’s appearance through its repair and occupation and will assist in reducing vacancies at a prominent roadside position fronting The Quadrant, thereby securing the beneficial reuse of a vacant listed building.”

Furthermore, the applicant said as demand for parking for a takeaway is characteristically during the evening, it could actually serve to alleviate traffic congestion and parking demand during the daytime, resulting in a more even distribution of parking and vehicular trips over a 24-hour period.

The planned opening times are 11am until 11pm seven days a week. The site lies within the Buxton Conservation Area at the corner of the junction of The Quadrant, St John’s Street and Station Road.
