Tesco “still interested” in Buxton site

A spokesman for the supermarket giant said: “We withdrew our previous application to reflect on the feedback that residents gave to us and we’re grateful for people having shared their views.

“We’re still interested in providing a new store for the Buxton community and we’re reviewing our options for this. Unfortunately I don’t have any further details to give at the moment.”

The controversial application to build a 40,000 square foot store on the former Buxton Water site on Station Road was withdrawn in December 2011. High Peak Borough Council were expected to decide on the proposal on December 12, 2011.

The plans, which were submitted in September 2011, sparked debate in the area and led to opposing campaign groups Yes to Tesco and No to Tesco being formed.

The outline application was for a store which would be twice the size of the existing Tesco store in Bridgemont, Whaley Bridge.

It also included a 50,000 square foot mixed-use development incorporating student accommodation. At the time, Tesco said the development would create up to 200 jobs and provide more than 350 free car parking spaces.
