Thief caught by CCTV camera

A thief claims he stole SD computer memory cards valued at £140 to feed his addiction to legal highs.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard this month how Andrew Firmin, 51, of Sheffield Road, Chesterfield, stole the SD memory cards on three occasions from Wilkinson’s store in Chesterfield.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “This case involves three thefts. The defendant was seen on CCTV near the SD memory display and then leaving the store.

“He was stopped and arrested and he made full admissions to the police and said he was addicted to legal highs and had stolen the cards to feed that addiction.”

Firmin pleaded guilty to the thefts which included one on November 20 as well as the theft of two cards on November 21 and another two cards also on November 21.

The SD cards stolen on November 20 were valued at £20 and those stolen on November 21 were valued at £120.

Magistrates adjourned the case for sentencing on February 5.

Firmin was given a 12 month conditional discharge and if he commits any further offences he can be resentenced for the thefts of the SD cards and for any new matter.

Magistrates, who took Firmin’s guilty plea into consideration during sentencing, also ordered him to pay £140 compensation, a £15 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

The defendant is expected to pay the court at £5 per week.

Witnesses or anyone with information about crimes are urged to call Derbyshire Constabulary on 101.
