Police are appealing for witnesses to the crime, which took place between 2.30pm and 6.45pm, to get in touch.

The theft comes at a time when police and Derbyshire Dales District Council are teaming up to advise motorists about vehicle security and remove valuables from their cars.

PCSO Anthony Boswell, from Hathersage Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Thieves will try their luck if they think there is a chance valuables will be left inside and our advice is to take your items with you when you can.

“Even leaving them out of sight might not be enough if a thief thinks they can get away with it. They will often strike when there aren’t many people about and in isolated areas, so if you are parking in one, please take extra care.
