M1 northbound near Chesterfield back open following fallen power cable fire

Highways England previously closed all lanes in both directions on the motorway from junction 29 which connects with the A617 to Chesterfield to junction 29A at Markham Vale Services, leading to the A6192 in Bolsover.
The M1 is now back open northbound, while southbound from junction 30 in Barlborough to junction 29A at Markham Vale Services remains closed.

Hide AdDerbyshire police and the county’s fire and rescue service remain at the scene along with local electricians are on scene to isolate and clear the power lines.
Officers were alerted to the blaze at 12.15pm today (April 20) from a passerby who reported that a power cable had come down from a pylon.
The fallen line had then set an area of grass next to the motorway alight.
All lanes on the M1 are now reopen northbound again in both directions and Derbyshire Constabulary have confirmed no one has been injured.

Hide AdHowever length delays are expected while southbound lanes remain shut and diversions are still in place.
Motorists are advised to avoid the motorway if possible and plan alternate routes to avoid congestion while highways workers, firefighters and police officers remain on the scene to make the road safe.
In a tweet, Derbyshire police said: “The M1 has now re-opened following an earlier closure between junctions 29 and 29a due to a fallen power cable.”
